Power Stone Locations and Uses

Who this is for: players deciding which skill unlocks deserve their scarce stones, and anyone who keeps confusing Power Stones, Oni Stones and Red Souls.

What Power Stones Do

Basic abilities sit in their own upgrade tree. Unlike Red Souls (which pay for the higher power tiers of a skill you already own), Power Stones are the unlock currency for the skills themselves and several mid-tier upgrades (PowerPyx structure; GamesRadar: “the former are needed for powering up your Basic Skills, including sneak attacks and your Oni Bow”).

Where to Find Power Stones

• Large black chests: the main source, placed around Kyoto and mission areas. Ordinary small chests never hold them (GamesRadar).
• Hidden chests: when your Gauntlet glows blue, trigger Oni Vision to reveal a hidden chest — many of these hold stones (GamesRadar).
• Map icons: the treasure icons on your map point at the visible chests; hidden ones need Oni Vision.
• One-tree-shade fights (一樹之陰): rewards include 1–2 Power Stones — e.g. the encounter The Silent Gauntlet pays two (PowerPyx/Gamerch).
• Oni Portals (鬼の門) and Kyoto tales: clearing portal battles and certain side stories pays stones (e.g. the Wife’s Prayer tale pays two).
• Story bosses: Rasho-gan drops one Power Stone as part of his reward (Polygon).

Best Upgrade Uses

Because 53 stones cover every basic skill in one playthrough (PowerPyx), you cannot permanently lock yourself out — the real question is order:

1. Deflect and Chain Issen lines — defensive counters are the combat backbone and benefit every fight.
2. Absorb Souls While Attacking (2 Power Stones) — stops enemies stealing souls and speeds the whole economy.
3. Charm Capacity (2–3 stones) — more charm slots are pure power; see the skill tree for the capacity unlocks.
4. Oni Bow basics — needed for several puzzles and boss tethers (Rasho-gan).

Side Content Rewards

Power Stones are the main reason to clear one-tree-shade encounters and early Kyoto tales: they pay in stones where normal exploration pays in cloth and iron. Check quest reward previews on the map before choosing what to do (material guide).

Missable Status

COMMUNITY REPORTED Not missable in the strict sense: your skills and upgrade materials carry into New Game+ (NG+ guide), so any stone skipped in run one can be collected in run two. What is time-gated is the final mission — The Clash at Rendaino is the point of no return for that save, so finish chest-hunting before it if you want a clean single-run checklist.
