Oni Stone Locations and Uses
Quick Answer
Oni Stones (鬼石) unlock and upgrade special abilities — the power skills tied to Oni Vision, Oni Strength, your Oni Armaments and armament-linked techniques. Unlike Power Stones, one playthrough does not provide enough Oni Stones to upgrade everything (PowerPyx), so they are the true end-game material: pick the abilities that match your loadout and plan to finish the rest in New Game+. Sources are the same family as Power Stones — large hidden chests, one-tree-shade fights, Oni Portals and quest rewards.
Who this is for: players planning their Oni Armament and Oni Vision lines, and anyone who found Power Stones easy but Oni Stones scarce.
What Oni Stones Do
Special abilities are the second skill tree. Where Power Stones cover always-on basics (Chain Issen, Deflect, Blazing State), Oni Stones pay for the exotic branches: Oni Vision treasure-sensing and range, Oni Strength destruction speed (Slice / Chop), Oni Armament combo and power steps (e.g. Two Celestials), and late abilities such as Flashing Void and Still Water (PowerPyx; GamesRadar: “the latter [Oni Stones] are required for more powerful Special Skills, which include your Oni Armaments”).
GAMEPLAY VERIFIED Guide examples: Oni Vision: Treasures costs 2 Oni Stones; Oni Strength: Slice and Chop cost 3 each; Two Celestials: Combo Strength costs 2 — the same abilities then take Red Souls (4,500–8,500) for their highest tiers.
Where to Find Oni Stones
- Large black chests (incl. hidden ones): same family as Power Stones — map icons for visible chests, Oni Vision (triggered when your Gauntlet glows blue) for hidden ones (GamesRadar).
- One-tree-shade fights: several encounters pay Oni Stones as their reward.
- Oni Portals (鬼の門): cleared portal battles pay upgrade materials including stones.
- Kyoto tales / side stories: later optional tales reward stones (check the map preview before starting).
- Story bosses: Rasho-gan drops an Oni Stone with his reward (Polygon).

Guide sites disagree on whether a fixed per-playthrough Oni Stone total exists and what it is — we are not publishing a total count. Treat any “all locations” list as a community checklist.
Best Upgrade Uses
Because Oni Stones do not cover everything in one run, spend them on abilities that change how you play rather than small bonuses:
- Oni Vision: Treasures (2 stones) — pays for itself by revealing hidden chests that hold more stones and materials.
- Your main Oni Armament line — combo strength / power steps for the armament you actually bring (which armaments are best).
- Oni Strength slice/chop speed if you clear Malice barriers often — faster barrier breaks speed up exploration (puzzles and exploration hub).
- Hold the rest until you know your late-game loadout; stones carry into New Game+.
Side Quest and Exploration Sources
Oni Stones concentrate in the optional layer: one-tree-shade encounters, portal battles and later Kyoto tales pay them, while ordinary exploration pays cloth and iron. Use the map reward preview to target tales that pay stones (material guide for the wider economy).
